Michelle Alexander is a Professor of Bioarchaeology and a Principal Investigator of MEDGREENREV based in BioArCh at the Department of Archaeology at the University of York, UK. Her research involves the application of biomolecular techniques to understand the dynamics of multi-faith societies in historical periods. She has a particular interest in major socio-cultural and economic transitions, especially involving medieval Islamic and/or multicultural societies of the Mediterranean and was a Co-Investigator of the AHRC-funded Landscapes of ReConquest project.

She is also interested in the dynamics of human-animal-plant interactions made visible through biomolecular evidence. Michelle is the overall lead of the MEDGREENREV team at BioArCh, applying biomolecular analysis (isotope analysis, ancient DNA and organic residue analysis) to a range of materials including human and animal bone, plants, sediment and ceramics to address questions surrounding changing patterns of diet, cuisine, mobility and plant and animal management.
